Skinky, the Beaner man has spoken and he has spoken wisely.
Always remember, there is no statute of limitations on war crimes, murder is murder. You should be aware too that many of the war stories you hear from veterans are bullshit, pure and simple, often told by guys who weren't even there or by guys who never really saw any action while they were in-country but now feel the need to embellish their service by telling lies about what they did and what they witnessed. See the book, STOLEN VALOR by B. G. Burkett. There was a time, back in the '80s, when bogus Vietnam vets or real vets who felt compelled to impress others with phony war stories, abounded. Unfortunately, the media, which was universally anti-Vietnam war, fastened on to these charlatans and thereby sullied the service of the millions of men who served honorably and with courage in that war.
I'm not saying the stories you've heard are phony. Just be careful how and to whom you repeat them and remember than after 40 years a man's memory fades and events get distorted and he can honestly "remember" events that never happened. Ask any real vet what unit he served with in wartime and if he can't tell you, right down to which squad in which platoon he was with, apply salt to his story. He might have forgotten which squad in which platoon he was with but he'll sure remember his company and his regiment. And if anyone purporting to be a vet tells you his mission was so secret he can't tell you who he served with but he's still full of hair-raising stories about the action he saw, tune him out immediately because he's lying.
Believe me, I exposed a lot of these guys when I wrote for the Vietnam Veterans Review (now defunct) and the Washington Times and some of them were very convincing liars.
