Skink, Petraeus was a mere lieutenant when Dan was a sergeant major. Lieutenants outranking sergeants major is a very minor techincality. In fact, lieutenants are beneath notice for sergeants major.

Wow, it's been so long since I have heard words of such profound wisdom almost makes me want to volunteer!

Sgt. Major is a NCO rank...where Lt. is a recognized Officer ranking, so what do you think?

Lieutenants are generally young and experienced officers while the sergeant major is old and experienced and the lieutenant would be wise to defer to him in everything.  But yes, officers (and warrant officers) outrank all enlisted grades.

What I saw when I was in the Marines:

A lieutenant, when encountering a sergeant major, came to attention, saluted him, and addressed him as "sir." A captain and a sergeant major would salute each other simultaneously and address each other as "sir."

Bear in mind, lieutenant and captain are company grade officers, sergeant major is a battalion or higher grade.
