It ain't Starfist or DemonTech, but...
Posted: 27 May 08 7:52 PM Modified By DavidS on 5/27/2008 7:56:59 PM)
I wasn't quite ready to do this yet, but Trang jumped the gun on me, so here goes.

As some of you know, I went through a stretch of about six and a half years, from publication of The Squad until Dan and I came up with Starfist, when publishers didn't even want to look at anything I wrote. But I wasn't idle during that time; I wrote four novels (one of which eventually became Onslaught, the first DemonTech book) and started several more. Two of those were:

The Junkyard Dogs, which was to be the last of my Vietnam War novels. Unfortunately, the VN market had tanked by the time I finished it, and has never come back, so I haven't been able to get it published, even though I think it's better than any of my published VN novels.

The Hunt, was the first non-war novel I wrote. It's a vampire story. My object was to show, from their point of view, how vampires would actually have to function to keep the rest of us from finding out about them and hunting them all down. In my opinion, it's the best thing I've ever written. Two comments from editors who rejected it may tell you something; "Even the good guy's a bad guy!" and, "It's a man's view of vampires, it won't appeal to the Laurell K. Hamilton fans."

Years of rejection on both of them later, I wasn't about to give up totally. I decided to self-publish. In most self-publishing, the author pays for having the book printed and made available. In money, which isn't the way publishing is supposed to work--money is supposed to flow TO the author, not FROM the author. But there are a couple of new things on the market today. One is the Amazon Kindle ebook reader. If you've been to Amazon recently, you may have noticed that the Kindle is the only ebook version they now offer. Well, I've done the two books up as Kindles, and if you've got the reader you can buy them on Amazon. Amazon has another subsidary called "Create Space," which is a Print On Demand publisher. With POD, you order the book and it gets printed out and either shipped to you, or delivered to the store where you ordered it. So I got both books up as POD books.

In neither case did I have to shell out any bucks--remember, money is supposed to flow TO the author, not FROM the author. I just had to do the heavy work of setting up the files for Kindle and POD.

Both books have been available as Kindles for some while now. The Hunt has been up as a POD for a couple of months. But I had two months of delays on the cover of The Junkyard Dogs, and just today finally got my proof copy and authorized the book to be available. The PODs are trade paperbacks, not the mass market pbs the rest of my/my and Dan's books are. Large size; 6"x9". I set the price on them. I made the price as low as I could and still get anything for them. The Junkyard Dogs is $15.00 and The Hunt is $13.00. Amazon says it has The Hunt in stock, so you don't have to wait for a copy to be printed out. But, as I only authorized the release of The Junkyard Dogs an hour or so ago, it's not listed yet except as a Kindle. When it is, like The Hunt, it'll be eligible for free shipping (if your total order is $25.00 or more).

Oh, yes. The Kindles; The Junkyard Dogs is $4.80 and The Hunt is $4.00. TJD is more expensive because it's longer. Both books have sold a few copies in Kindle, and The Hunt has sold a few copies of the POD.

I don't have the page I really want set up on my website yet, but there is a page that has the two of them, plus that Star Wars thingie that Dan and I are guilty of. Click on "Buy the Books" and then on "Other Books" to find them.

Here's something else for you to chew on: I have a few copies of The Hunt on hand, and right after I authorized the release of The Junkyard Dogs, I ordered a few copies of it--it'll probably be two or three weeks before I have them, though. What I'm getting at here is, if you order them directly from me, I'll autograph them for you. I'll even pay the postage, though I'd appreciate it if you kicked in a couple of bucks for it.

I think I've run on long enough.

Oops. Almost forgot. Trang, The Hunt was not intended to be the first in a series. If you read it, you'll understand why it can't be.

What is a POD???? My frield has a Kindle and I was amazed at it but I perfer to hold the book in my hand. That is until the Kindle goes down for price. I think a Kindle costs $350. Pretty cool gadget if you ask me and I am usually up to date on my Tech.

Kindle is cool platform, just a bit pricey for me at moment, I have been looking that the sony reader also, its also pricey. I imagine by summers end I will have one or the other. I want something poratble I can carry multiple books on for when Im at work ( work security overnights and read when I stop for breaks, usually get in 100-150 pages a night), and carring around my paper backs they get beat up to much, not to metion trying to carry Hardbacks.

Most excellent!! I am still working on getting all the VN novels you wrote(scouring the used book stores, and online) so would wait on the Junkyard Dogs. Just a tad anyway.

I would say....hmmmm.. week , maybe ten days at most and then I can order the Hunt from you? if that isnt two long before your copies are gone? if gone will order from amazon, either way it sounds great. Will pay for shipping and what ever extra ya advise.

As for "The Hunt" being a stand alone novel, that works for me too, I enjoy works from favorite authors in all forms:) If you email and let me know what I need to get to you at trangthetroll@hotmail.com Ill get it in the mail later next week if that is workable.

Thanks again!
And Ill add the works to my Myspace page after I get them, and Hope you sell a elephants arse load of both.

FairDay,

Trang
