wouldn't a hydrogen bomb be just as effective and not nearly as harmful to the atmosphere? Kill all living forms of life, then go back in after a few years and claim the oil!

Ohhhh, wouldn't some of you perverts just LOVE that! But here's the way to do it: Search everyone and all baggage, sure, make certain there ain't no bombs aboard, 'n then issue every passenger a SigSaur P228 9mm semi-automatic w/ 10 rounds of subsonic ammo 'n then let some SOB try to take over the plane. You take the guns back at the end of the flight and reissue them for the next one, of course, and if anyone fires one while inflight, well, he/she has to clean it. Archie Bunker came up with this idea years ago and Ijust modified it a little. Let's send it to Chertoff.
PS: Oh, one more thing. No flight could exceed an altitude of 3,000 feet. No pressurization authorized, see? Can't have someone puncturing the airframe with a round at 35,000 feet!

Yes, Archie's idea was exactly spot on, for certain.

Actually, it has been demonstrated that a simple bullet puncture at 35k wouldn't be much of a problem. All it would cause would be a slow leak. Airliner airframes are in any case not perfectly sealed and leak anyway. Just slowly enough that it isn't noticeable. And a 9mm hole in the airframe wouldn't add much to it. Now, what I would be concerned about is a round hitting command and control features like hydraulic lines. Or penetrating the center fuel tank, though I believe they puncture-proof those things.

Well, it'd be just my luck it'd blow a window out right where I was sitting and then you zoomies would have to go back and recalculate your figures.
