The French and Italians are too easy, the Russians are too paranoid to poke fun at, there are too damn many Chinese to take the risk of pissing them off, I'm a wee part Irish, the Poles have had far more than their fair share.

Objecting too strenuously to stereotypes is like saying you don't like Shakespeare's plays because they have too many cliches.

As far as I can tell, it all started with the our Teutonic friends enlightening the world about thier neiborghs intelectual prowes.. I know wa-a-a-ay to many Polish jokes for my own good, mainly because I've been on the recieving end so often.

I think it got started during the large waves of immigration here from Eastern Europe when so many of the immigrants spoke such poor English they were automatically classified as ignorant and stupid.  You all know the stories about how last names got anglicized at Ellis Island because immigration officials couldn't spell or understand the Polish pronunciation.  If you know anything about the history of Poland you know those people were highly accomplished in the fields of art and science.  That they were conquered so quickly by the Germans was due more to poor leadership and tactics than to stupidity in the ranks but perhaps that blitzkrieg victory reinforced the stereotype.  Funny, isn't it, that the Brits emerged from Dunkirk with their reputation intact.  Probably because we Anglo-Americans have always been on top so we set the standards for stereotyping other cultures.

It may be so, but I'll hold my judgement untill a later time.
