The Marines are already using hovercraft today, even though the navy owns them. They not only go from ship to shore, they can go some distance inland, though I don't know just how far. Aside from its air cushion, the Dragon is more related to today's AAV--Armored Amphibious Vehicle, the successor to the Amtracs (amphibious tractors) of my day.
