"VERY large sums of money" = permission.

Considering how little we make off these books, "very large" is a relative term.

I would think that you would make more royalties than you do. I mean the series is selling well isn't it?

Eric, yes, the series is selling well but the method Random House uses to pay us is the problem.  First the books have to earn back their advances and then when royalties become available our agent skims off 15% (or is it 20% David?) off the top and what's left over is split between us.  And the way they pay advances is not advantageous to us either.  We don't get all the money up front but some when we sign the contract, more when we deliver an acceptable manuscript, and the final slug when the book is published.  So while the total amount of the advance might sound very prosperous, you don't get the whole thing at one time and it can be up to a year before you get it all.  David knows this stuff better than I do but that's the gist of it.  I'm retired from both the Army and the Civil Service so I get a stipend from them plus social security and a small check from the VA and I work part time as well, but let me tell you, if all you had as income was the money paid for this series you'd be hurting.
