Mike:  Have you ever wondered what it must've been like to be a slave on a Roman galley?  Well, try writing a series for a big publisher and you'll get a first-hand glimpse!

Romans didn't use slaves... Cartheginians did. Roman sailors were MARINES, not slaves. Back in the days of that particular Empire, they were called the Second Service. Now, if you admit to being a Cartheginian slave, or perhaps, a Catheginian, period, that would explain why the Irish readers I know like you so much.

Panzer, in all the time I've know you you haven't been wrong about anything and I'm not saying you're wrong now, but were you joking with us when you asserted the Romans didn't use slaves in their galleys?  Why...why...that would mean they got it wrong in "Ben Hur"!

Trust me, you aren't going to find anyone my age who knows more about the Romans and the ROMAN empire then me. When it comes to the Romans, the world tends to think of them as the Irish do the English: we over-dramatasize what they did to us. Think of it this way: would YOU let slaves run the motors of a destroyer? You think that if you were the 'captain' of a Roman Galley and you were attacked by Catheginians, who would you rather have at your back, a slave or Marine?

Thought so.

You see, you Marines have a longer reputation for being the Hardest fighters in the world then you thought possible.

Dear Sir:  Well, look at it this way, the Roman economy was based on slavery.  You don't think the patricians cultivated their own fields, cooked their own food, tended to their own children, do you?  Gibbon estimated that the number of slaves in the Roman Empire was at least equal to the number of  free Romans.  That is millions of slaves.  They were everywhere, sort like illegal immigrants here today.  Of course the Roman slavery system was not as harsh as some others that have existed, one could attain his freedom under it through hard work and good behavior and I'm pretty sure in many households the slaves were treated as decently as the family members themselves.  But yeah, with slaves forming such a significant role in Roman society, I can see them manning the oars in a naval vessel.  What the heck, they were trustworthy enough to take care of the captain's kids.
