He's a closet gay and has a relationship with Claypoole.  That'll come out in Book 13, PURPLE PULSE.  Ha, ha, had you guys goin' there, didn't I?  Now where, pray tell my children, is there an illustration of Bass in, on, or about any of our books?  Cover art doesn't count.

Oh, good GOSH no, cover art doesn't count!  The cover art on the Starfist books, with the exceptions of PointBlank and Flashfire, is annoying.  It's almost a hallmark of the series, I am sorry to say.  And though Flashfire's cover is very well done and one of my favorite book covers, ever, and very attractive, even there the image of the soldier does not match that of a Confederation Marine, but looks more like an early 21st Century US soldier.

So, don't look at the covers for art of what Confederation Marines look like.  We need a Starfist fan who is also an artist to do a serious job of illustrating the books.

I picture Bass as a Kurt Russell type. Strong Jawline, square shoulders and piercing eyes when mad. Like he was in the sci-fi Soldier or in Stargate

I've always pictured Bass as being African American, but almost every other character I assume is white.  I should probably blame the Halo series, because the only black character in Halo 1 was the badass sergeant Johnson, but for the life of me, I can't remember if I started reading STARFIST before or after I started playing Halo.

Eric, one thing we agreed on before we started writing this series is that our universe would be color blind, that by 2450 there'd have been enough intermarriage among human populations that race would no longer be a distinguishing factor in relationships.  Just look at the names of some of the characters, though, and you can tell what their origins are.  I guess we achieved this synthesis because it's hard to tell from the way we describe our characters what their ancestry was.  With McNeal and Dr. Bynum, for instance, it should be pretty obvious where their people came from but with other characters, you might be surprised when you find out their origins.  But Bass, in my mind, is Caucasian because in my mind he's based on a real person I knew in Vietnam.  He was killed there.

MC:  You bet, cover art is a VERY sore point with us!  Unfortunately, in most cases we did not have much if any input to the cover art on our books.  With FLASHFIRE we did see the art beforehand.  We felt it was a very accurate representation of the series because our Marines are based on the 20th-century Royal Marines and the USMC so the 20th-century Marine against the deep-space background on that cover shows the link between the past and the future in our novels. That goes along with our firm belief that history repeats itself, which I am sure you've already noticed in these books where old battles are sometimes fought over again in the far distant future.  We think one reason for that is because human nature doesn't change.
