He's a closet gay and has a relationship with Claypoole.  That'll come out in Book 13, PURPLE PULSE.  Ha, ha, had you guys goin' there, didn't I?  Now where, pray tell my children, is there an illustration of Bass in, on, or about any of our books?  Cover art doesn't count.

Emperor's Finest, don't bothering listening to this guy. He might sound like one of the co-authors, but he's just a very big fan. (heh heh heh.)

Eric, one thing we agreed on before we started writing this series is that our universe would be color blind, that by 2450 there'd have been enough intermarriage among human populations that race would no longer be a distinguishing factor in relationships.  Just look at the names of some of the characters, though, and you can tell what their origins are.  I guess we achieved this synthesis because it's hard to tell from the way we describe our characters what their ancestry was.  With McNeal and Dr. Bynum, for instance, it should be pretty obvious where their people came from but with other characters, you might be surprised when you find out their origins.  But Bass, in my mind, is Caucasian because in my mind he's based on a real person I knew in Vietnam.  He was killed there.

This is where Turtledove brings up an intersting question in Homeward Bound, the last of the Colonization books. What is going to happen if we spread out in the universe, but don't homogonize the human race before we do it?

MC:  You bet, cover art is a VERY sore point with us!  Unfortunately, in most cases we did not have much if any input to the cover art on our books.  With FLASHFIRE we did see the art beforehand.

I have to modify what I said earlier about the cover art: there is another cover that I think well of, and it more correctly reflects the substance of the series than any other cover, and that is the cover for PointBlank.  One can see that the artist actually made an attempt to uniform the Marines with something that looks like chameleons and body armor, and the weapons, thank goodness, do not look like some idiotic variant of the M16.  The cover in this case actually seems to be portraying an event in the book, will wonders never cease, and that would be Force Recon blowing a satellite buster.

Yes, I know, but I mean in terms of the Species. What would happen to our decendant species?
