Ted Sturgeon

34th FIST, it looks like, is getting many more deployments than a hardship post should get. :-)

We all know by now that 34th FIST has been pulled out of the regular personnel rotations. I wonder if there's a way for Aguinaldo to pull a fast one...

Sturgeon's probably overdue for his second star/nova/whatever. If the Marines don't have to submit them to the Joint Chiefs (why would they?), but to the Confederation's Congress (who are likely to not know all the classified details) as part of a flag officers' promotion list, you'd wind up with a major general commanding a FIST. That would probably raise a few eyebrows after the fact. Or it might justify putting a much larger force on Thor.

One thing's for sure, Sturgeon needs all the help he can get, and that might include additional rank.

I'm pretty sure I asked this via e-mail before, but I can't recall the answer. Is Ted Sturgeon named after Theodore Sturgeon, the famed science fiction author?

kb7,

You bet, 34th FIST is certainly getting more than its fair share of deployments. Somewhere along the line that will change--but not before the existence of the Skinks is made public.

I think it was stated in Hangfire that commander of a FIST is the most desired posting in the Corps, and that Sturgeon was not unhappy about being frozen in rank as long as he held that position.

I don't remember you asking in an email, but yes, Brigadier Sturgeon is named after the great SF writer Ted Sturgeon.

Another problem Ted will face is what Aguinaldo told Ted when he visited earth.  Because the army botched the Diamunde landing, Aguinaldo took overall comand, which pissed off the army and would make it difficult to get any of the unit commanders involved promoted.

It seems the army has a inferiority complex.

Don't forget Billy's Nepoleon complex.

Now David, you mentioned making the Skink issue public.  CS said the same thing.  Is this a hint at Firestorm or the next book?  And if that happens, do some people get to come back from Darkside?

In real life it's the Marines who have the inferiority complex but be careful who you tell.
