Speaking of latrines, I've had a flashback:  When I crossed the Atlantic on the troop ship, the USNS Butner, in February 1959, I noticed sitting on the john -- a long trough that ran from stern to bow, each hole "flushed" by the stream -- that when the ship would slide down a wave all the water in the trough would run forward and when she came up it'd run back toward the stern, so nobody would ever sit at either end because when the water came rushing by it'd geyser up through the last hole right into the, er, ah, well, you know.

That was a neat adventure.  I never got seasick but I noticed by day ten the food didn't taste all that delicious anymore.  I was occupied the whole voyage on the rust-chipping detail in the forward ammunition magazine (there'd been a bow gun mounted forward when the ship was in service during World War I), away down there where the hull met the water.

We made landfall at Southampton and all these limeys sitting on the docks shouted the most awful imprecations at us so all 1200 GIs standing on deck yelled back the most utterly disgusting filthy epithets which have since become household words around here.  I don't understand why.  Nobody except me was on that ship.

Bean Old Bean, I never could abide their beer.  Or German beer either for that matter.  Now the Aussies and the Filippinos put out some good brew and frankly, Sapporo and OB aren't that far behind.  But man, I am a convert to Lagavulin!
