AB, fill us in on the Class "A" uniform.  I see everyone around here, even at the Pentagon, wearing BDUs of one kind or another.  Used to be you NEVER wore field uniform in a staff position unless you were participating in an exercise and you could get a delinquency report from the MPs if you were caught wandering around in them down on civvie street unless you were married and just stopping in somewhere for groceries on your way home from work

Gotta enforce that Military Manner, else what does the Army have but guns, rifles, and an occasional grenade?

It seems strange that so many military commanders know so little about this piece of technology used by ( 50 FISTs plus additional units )...

Yet we find at least one commander in every book that seems suprised that the Marines are invisible.

Tolt, Armyblank said it about as well as I could have. While there are 50-plus FISTS, and the Marines have training areas on a few other worlds, eg. the Fourth Fleet Marine HQ on Halfway, there are more than 200 human-settled worlds. So the vast majority of people--including officers in local planetary militaries--have never had occasion to "see" Marines in their combat uniforms.

People who don't have up-close contact can have mistaken beliefs about what is or isn't. For example, I recently read a novel by an author I consider fairly good; he refered to a SAW as an assault rifle. Yeah right, so was the BAR. If I'd seen the book in galleys, I would have corrected him.

I'm still a little hazy on that issue myself. I'd think that an Assault rifle would be just any other automatic rifle, as you say Mr. Sherman, the B.A.R. Furthermore, I would say that a S.A.W. would be something you'd want to mount on a vehicle, like an M60 or the Belgian M72 I think it was.
