Chesty
Posted: 27 Dec 06 12:54 AM Modified By kb7iuj on 12/27/2006 12:55:27 AM)
Last Thursday I celebrated my 29th birthday. As part of that, I got the requisite (no, I didn't requisition) gift cards, since my family doesn't know what to buy me. (Case in point, my brothers gave me a couple old comedy films. I'm not that enthused.)

So I was wandering around my old haunts in a Barnes & Noble I hadn't been to before: science fiction and computers. After forty-five minutes wandering around over books I'd seen on the shelves before, I just browsed around, and finally stumbled on the military history section.

Where I found a book titled "Chesty".

It's taken me several days to get through it, but I'm glad I did. The name is famous, but since I served in the Navy and not the Marine Corps, I only knew he was a legendary Marine. The book will now be a part of my collection as soon as I get home.

In hearing the conflicts between Puller and staff jobs (and on Marines getting the short end of the stick -- the one that's been exposed to the forest fire and is nothing but carbon), I swear it sounded just like the StarFist series's running story on the subject. I also note that Charlie Bass sounds a lot like the character described in the biography.

In retrospect, I'm actually a bit surprised to not recall any mention of Lt. Gen. Puller in the StarFist series to date. Perhaps one of my colleagues here will correct me on that. Or it could simply be that the intervening centuries have allowed the Marines to lose track of this man.

I know I've reflected on Patton before here, so I hope you'll forgive me bringing up another historical reference. My sincere apologies for my continued absence; I've had a lot of other things on my mind (like building new tools)

KB:  We were debating sending out a search team to see what had happened to you.  No, I don't think we have mentioned Puller and no, it's extremely unlikely that our Marines would've forgotten about him.  History does not forget about such men.

kb7iuj,

If we haven't mentioned Chesty Puller, well, I'm surprised. Wait a minute, I know we made an oblique reference. Captain Conorado's wife, I think, has the same name as Chesty's wife. And Conorado's first name, Lew, is the same as Chesty's. That was deliberate.

It's traditional that the Marines do the most with the least. Although there was an ironic turn-around at the beginning of Desert Shield in 1990. The first Army units to reach Saudi Arabia flew in with only their organic weapons. The Marines, however, had a prepositioned flotilla of ships with enough to sustain a full Marine brigade (much bigger than an army brigade) for a month of heavy combat. So the Marines supplied the army until the army's equipment, heavy weapons, and supplies could catch up with them

Chesty will probalbe get a spot like Alexander the great or Napolian.  He will not be forgotten but alot of people will not mention him in conversation.

AB:  I think that all depends on the people you associate with.  Those who hate the military service, they won't remember him, but In Marine messes he'll continue to be revered.  By the way, I thought Lew Conorado's first name was in honor of Lew Walt.
