Dan and I used the structure of today's Marine Expeditionary Unit to develop the FIST. An MEU is basically a battalion landing team and composit squadron with supporting units. An element of the BLT is an artillery battery. I'm not positive of the exact number of guns in today's battery, but I'm pretty sure it's six tubes.

The army is artillery heavy, just as it's armor heavy. The Marines move much more lightly. Ground attack aircraft supply the Marines with much of the heavy punch that artillery and armor give to the army.

Korean War. At the beginning of the war, the North Koreans pushed the South Korean and US armies down to the bottom of the peninsula, where they were about to be overrun. The First Provisional Marine Brigade landed and plugged holes in the line until US forces could build up to the point where they could drive the North Koreans back.

Even though the Marines had a nominal division at the time of the North Korean invasion, the Corps had been reduced so severely after WWII that one brigade was all that could be assembled to deploy quickly.
