I believe he became aware of his own mortality right then. Kerr also showed his fear as well. Even though he tried to hide it the other marines could smell it, kinda like a dog can sense or "smell" the fear on a man, but out of respect for their brother they said nothing but watched his actions.    Gunny Sarge wrote That is true.
