Mortars- BEWARE (Soldris) SPOILER ALERT
Posted: 27 Jun 07 2:39 PM
i was just reading the part in Firestorm where Company L is in the ambush site of the Battalion that is behind the hill. Lima opens fire upon the observers and drives them back. The enemy battalion is so close together that, "They're almost shoulder to shoulder for more than a klick and a half, maybe two klicks." (pg 227) Wouldn't it be practical for the Marines to have some type of mortars that could rain shells on the enemy with a devestating effect. if you hade even 4 mortars per company, the 4 mortars from L company and 4 from M company would seriously cut the enemy down from their overwhelming numbers. It seems that it would be a major asset if the FISTs had encorporated mortars teams in their ranks. That is what I think at least.

PS Congrats go to Dan and David for writing an excellent, spell-binding book. Congrats also for the great reviews.

PPS I just wanna say one more thing: KEEP'EM COMIN! : - )

Thank you, Gunny Sarge. But, alas, no indirect fire weapons on the FIST level. Gotta bring in the army for that.

Aaarrrrgggghhhh!  I just wrote a very literate and rational appeal to advocate that FIST companies be given organic mortar support, and it took so long to write it that the site logged me out!  All that beautiful verbiage: *BLIP*  Straight into the bitbucket.

OK, I'll just direct you to the M224 60mm Mortar article on Wikipedia.  It has longer range than the trusty 81mm I used while in my Army service (and David is familiar with from his 'Nam service), and is way lighter.  Confederation DoD R&D needs to dig out the specs and resurrect this weapon.  Can you imagine a white phosporous round from this weapon exploding in the midst of a group of Skinks?  FLASH!  Even if they were under water!

In "First To Fight" were not mortors used against the Marines when securing New Obbia?
