I am new to the Starfist Universe and have made it throught the first 7 books. Being from North Dakota the choice of Fargo as a Capital for anything is quite entertaining. Have the authors ever said why they decided on Fargo? Was it just a nice random spot or did they acctually spend time there? Also, what really freaked me out, in Book 7 Coronado goes to trial at Camp Darby outside Fargo. I do know that about 170 miles from Fargo near Devils Lake there is a settelment that shows up on most maps of North Dakota as a town called Darby. This town is nothing more them the ruins of a grain elevator a house a garage and until five years ago a barn. I know this because that is the house I was raised in from 6 until 21( so I'm a slacker). Darby was the name of my dog. I wonder if the two could be connected? (the town not the dog)
Thanks for the fun forum and thanks to David and Dan for some fun books.

Tatie: We welcome you most warmly to our small and tight circle of misfits, drunks, nuts, and SF readers! Don't let the kooks here get to you. We ARE serious people!
I don't remember why we picked Fargo as the capital of the Confederation. Maybe the movie was still fresh in one of our minds. I think the Second American Civil War had something to do with it since Washington & other East Coast cities were destroyed, so they moved out West. That suggestion has been made in real life during the Cold War. Same with Camp Darby. May have named it after Darby's Rangers of WWII fame, but can't be sure now. Anyway, it's absolutely fascinating that you are from those parts and actually grew up in a place called Darby! We pick names for people, places, and things at random, often on the spur of the moment. That's how we came up with the name Jason Billie for the general who screws things up on Ravenette (I don't think you've gotten to that book yet). Wouldn't you know, a real person named Jason Billie wrote us a fan letter, before he read the first book with Billie in it, saying how thrilled he was to have a fictional character with his name. Never heard from the guy again!
