Invading a Planet
Posted: 03 Oct 07 9:59 PM

To me Starfist is one of the best in Millitary sci-fi series at ground warfare and detailed execution of it from space.  Several sci-fi series are set up in space only having no ground combat or it is limited to "and then the troops landed."  I would like to know what other good books about future ground combat there is, specificly invading and conquering whole planets.  I've read and love Starship Troopers and cannot get through any David Drake or John Ringo books (I always lose intrest about 100 pages in).  Also, how would you conquer planet?   Transporting divisions of troops through space and then landing them on a hostile world would be a huge challenge by itself?  The Diamude campaign was one of my favorites because of the grand scale but what if the whole population were hostile to you with strong points all over their world?  Would you attack a major city right away or take a smaller city and build up strength and attack over land?  Considering the difficulty with imposing an outside will on a single country would you have enough troops and resources to win and establish a friendly government?  I'm thinking on the scale of WWII and the invasion of Europe and Germany.  An enemy that your population deems a threat and must be conquered.

It's really very much like landing on a hostile, fortified island as the Marines did many times during the campaign in the Pacific in WWII.    The Diamunde and Ravenette campaigns are a case in point, establish a foothold and expand from there and maintain fire superiority with your fleet in orbit.  On reviewer compared the campaign on Ravenette to McClelland's Peninsular Campaign of 1862.  Well, not quite.  Think of Revenette as Korea, 1950, the Pusan perimeter and then the Inchon landing.

That's because the surprise was complete, as it was when the Marines overran the 7th MPs on the coast and brushed aside the blocking force sent out to meet them on the road to Whatsisville.  But  after arriving there, there was fighting enough for everyone.  And once the Coalition's force was beaten, the door to victory had been swung open and Davis's army was chased into the mountains.
