As far as other Sci-fi books that can pull off a planet wide take over, the only thing that comes to mind are Keith Laumer's : Bolo's...planetary siege engines...and they have shoot me written all over them...but also do orbital deployment...also for David Drakes books, for a look at armored combat, his Hammers slammers are good...im a tread head at heart...o yeah..look up Ian Douglas and his Heritage trilogy, Semper Mars, Luna Marine, Europa strike...its more a Hard Sci-fi book, with more detail in real life contitions, although some liberties are taken, it was a great read.

Taking on a hostile planet...i would secure a beach head and move out from there...doesnt matter as to citys and towns...just as long as we can ensure the supply line and air superiority the rest should fall into place...and with imposing on another government...the easiest is to set up a proxy and re-enlist their surviving armed forced and turn them over to garrison duties...the way they do it in Starfist books is by far the most realistic...having the Essays loaded with the dragons allow for fast deployment when on the surface and a degree of added protection...also sending in the recon force to take out the enemys C&C structures and power plants...

taking over someones home by force and establishing a friendly govenment is kinda counter productive dont you think??it would take a few generations but it can be done...but do you really want to go through the headache that Israel is going through? the threat of death can only go soo far...hmmim kinda losing track...sry will write more when my heads on straight...

Whoa man. Dude if your joining the army/ marines you might make a good tactician. No seriously you might make a good tactician.

Also when your invading a planet don't you need precise intelligance or else you look like an idiot and your troops gets slaughtered. As well, invading a planet should avoid protracted wars rights? Because it will drain the manpower and destroy the economoy.

yeah it would have to be a swift battle, the momentum would have to stay high, if it bogs down it would turn ugly. As for the economy, it depends of you want to capture a planet or knock them back a few centuries for being naughty boys...for a capture, you really can't go around blowing eveything up...a quick strike on all TV/radio stations and the central govenment should work. with their central command taken away, you can out manuver them and get them to surrender...

as for my tactics, i'd love to but i will not put people into harms way if i can help it...the sharp end is not somewhere i would want to be, or send someone...

Spoken like a true officer.

Also try not to piss off the civilians too much or else your cause will be ruined. Try to avoid civilian casuality or else civilains won't support you at all in war. Even in war you need good intel so you and logistics can determine how much soldiers do the enemy have and wheres a good place to strike on weapons depot or barracks. Like one of the war book says "ask the locals about the terrain" or use spies.

Nam was diffrent..we were hog tied by the stupid ROE's and the geneva convention...from teh stories ive been able to find, and accounts from my friends dad...it was a mess. teh VC had all their crap above the parallel...where we could not go...china snuck in shipments of weapons and fighter and we could not fire upon them with out evident to support that account...and how is a phantom or a thunderchief supposed to do that, pull over and ask the skipper if hes running arms??? Case in point, a fighter bomber was flying a sortie over a VC port when he saw them off loading SAM missiles off the cargo ship, he went ahead and strafed it. But on the flight back, got worried about the ROE the he may have just violated, he with some help distroeid the gun camer footage and tried to lay low, the VC complied to geneva that a US fighter just attacked a food supply ship and gave the planes tail ...they asked for the gun footage to back the pilots account of the missiles, he had already distroyed it....everyone involved was busted a few ranks or reassinged..*i Think i got that from a autbio of Chuck Yeager...it was a friend of his was the commander involved...every time we hit one they would call geneva and complain that the US is attack peacefull supply ships full of food and medical supplies...the whole TV coverage wasnt a bright ideal...the VC knew the plans as well as our own troops did...and people in charge that really shouldnt have been...and Numbers wise we cleaned their clocks...but the nation was turning against it, and the locals weren't helping, also with Russia and China pouring in planes and tanks...and the US alone to try and hold it all back, we just could not spend that kind or blood or money...Its ashamed that the nation turned on the GI's in that war...its not their fault, they were following orders...it sickens me that people here could act that way, and why the hell isnt more said about Nam in our school text books? i could find maybe a chapter on the subject...o well im ranting now...next!
