A salute is a sign of respect between men in uniform although it is required between enlisted and officers when meeting in certain circumstances and if you don't render the hand salute, you're in trouble.  But once out of uniform, sure, you can salute whomever you wish, as a sign of respect toward that person.  Now as to former enemies, yeah, maybe, depends on the enemy and how you view that former enemy.  You may not at first meeting but if you get to know the guy, maybe you'd show each other mutual respect.

Right after the defeat of the enemy i've seen them salute each other in the movies, like Band Of Brother. Another thing that is more respectful then a salute is letting the enemy officers keep their sidearms

Its a thing of honor...now with these terrorist i wouldnt let them keep a nail file but if he was a respectable leader who wouldnt shame himself by taking the gun u let him keep and try too shot u...unless he was a 2 faced bastard but then he'd get gunned down anywayz

I remember watching Rules of Engagement with Samuel L Jackson saluting to a VC soldier or officer. I don't know if he was a officer or soldier.
