Michael, You sure are right that only "blind idealists" (I use to think of my self as one of those - but only half blind.) wouldn't want to believe that an actual Spec-ops mission might turn the wrong way. On this I would like to quote Gandalf of J.R.R. Tolkien (although this might seem a bit displaced here): "Many who live deserve death and some died that deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo?" I have studied military history long enough to be able to tell that the reason for some ways missions turned in a bad direction was plain bad luck, faulty planning or some politician playing megalomaniac or a combination of all that. But one thing will never change: it is that thin red line that will make the change. This thin red line composed of men and women that make sure the biggest part of the world can go to bed without having to worry much about what tomorrow will bring. We all have become far to egoistic to really appreciate that. I got my taste of this job and if some things would've come out differently, I'd still be there and not being a bank teller. And I am proud to be able to tell dangerous end of a rifle from a broomstick and I am not afraid of taking such a beast to the range (still in love with that Steyr AUG, gotta admit that). In contrary to those people who despise weapons with all their heart. And those fools who think that peace will come by itself, well, they just don't know what they are talking about. I have read once "Peace through superior firepower" on a patch of a A-10 Warthog Driver and I happen to agree. Rene

Now here's a guy who has obviously been reading my thoughts!  Well, Rene, you have hit on the basic theme of this series.  Both David and I fully realize that without people willing to defend their rights the animals would've taken over the whole planet long ago.  But we're not so naive as to believe "my country, right or wrong" because we know how badly stupid and venal leaders can screw things up.  I know a lot of readers were disappointed by how BACKSHOT ended.  We were too, but that how the mop flops.  But don't worry, the 34th FIST marches on!

Ok, this Thread is not getting enough love so the Deadman is here (hmmm...I think the Queen of Killers & I would make a great pair).

Dan/David:  Whats with Marcus & Chang-Sturdevant?  Sounds like they were childhood buddies or closer?  And was C-S ever married?  Is the Pres in office 4 years with a max of 8 or has that changed?

Deadshot:  Chang-Sturdevant's past is not important to the Starfist stories or it hasn't been up to now and we don't anticipate that it will in the future, but you never know.  We haven't even given a thought about giving her much of  a past.  She came from a working-class background which I think was revealed in one of the recent novels, and she likes ice cream.  She and Marcus are very close because they respect each other and have worked together for a long time.  The impression we want to leave with our readers is that she and Marcus are much more than friends.  Possibly there'll be more than just a hint about that in FIRESTORM but if so, it's still to be written.

Don't forget that she likes to drink!  She also has a lot of respect for the Marines.
