I read all of The Night Fighters novels when they came out. But only selected sections of There I Was. I've never been able to get beyond Chapter Two of The Squad; the type's so tiny it caused too much eye strain, which is probably a major reason the book did as poorly as it did. Haven't made any attempt to read any of my published books since.

Until now.

Because an anthology editor has asked me to write a DemonTech short story for an anthology of original stories he's working on, and a small press publisher has asked me to write a DemonTech novella for him, I'm reading Gulf Run to bring myself up to speed. Hey, I haven't done anything with DT for the past six years, ya know?

I can see why the series didn't appeal to readers of epic fantasy; I treat nobles and the aristocracy pretty poorly, and nobody's the fullfilment of an ancient prophasy or the reincarnation of a long-dead warrior-king. And the books have realistic details that epic fantasy tends to lack; flanking patrols, points and rear points strong enough to deal with problems, properly sited latrines to avoid disease.

Too bad the milSF crowd didn't pick up on it more. Lots of things they'd go for. As many of you know.

Anyway, it's interesting to read a book of mine for the first time in. . . damn, maybe twenty years.

Wouldn't Haft's emblem having any significant towards the soldiers joining the band as if he is some supreme commander? They seem to obey his command and leadership along with Spinner.

I thought you did a good job.

I said before, and I'll say again, it was poorly marketed...and, for that matter, the mil-SF crowd was not as organized as it is now.
IMHO, if you'd brought DemonTech over to Baen, I think it would have done well. John Ringo's "The Council Wars" series is in the same vein as DT, I think the same readers would gravitate that way.
Trouble is, now that Jim Baen is gone, I'm not terribly pleased with the way things are going at Baen. Would be nice if DelRey decided to compete in the milSF area.
Then we have Carrie Vaughn and her "Kitty the Werewolf" series over at Warner Books...it's kind of like "Twilight" for the over-21 crowd.
Dunno, like I said, I enjoyed DT immensely...as you might have guessed, if you've had a chance to look at any of "Minor Oversight" yet (grin)

I saw the original painting for the cover of Onslaught, and liked it as a painting. But I hated it as the cover of that book; it looks like the guy in the foreground caused the distruction in the background. I've always thought that if Baen had published DemonTech, the Golden Girl would have been front and center on every cover, and that would have sold copies. Alas, Del Rey asked me to write DemonTech, so I couldn't offer it to Baen.

My thanks to those of you who reported recent sightings of DemonTech in bookstores. I wish the books were more universally present. Yesterday I was in a Borders, and looked to see which of my books they had on the shelf. One--count it, one!--copy of Firestorm. Zero--count them, zero!--copies of any of the other Starfists, Force Recon, or DemonTech books.

Hmm. Makes me wonder if Border's stocking has anything to do with the financial troubles they're in today.

Maybe they are stocking up on Romance novels...
