This is a little late, but a month or so ago I finally got the last two NF books (one from Amazon and the other eBay), and read them through. David, you once wrote that you thought your best writing in this series was in the last novel, Charlie Doesn't Live Here Anymore, and I have to say that you are absolutely correct. But the whole series is highly memorable, and in my humble opinion borderline brilliant -- just over the borderline, in fact. Danged close to genius. And the closure in the last book was part of the geniosity (is that a word?). All things neatly tied up in a package.
Having them infiltrate the A Shau Valley was a super idea for a plot, I must say. Again, I really wish the series could go into re-issue somehow. I think it might get more attention these days than originally. It definitely deserves it. And while we're at it, Dan's The Soldier's Prize needs to be re-issued, too.
The only thing that gets a little ruined is my knowledge of how everything in V-N turned out in the end. The real villagers that the real Marines protected were probably ultimately savaged by the beasts of communism after they overran the place. There was much to be proud of for many who served, however much it was unsung.
