There were no "back lines" in the Vietnam war. I was not an infantryman so I was spared what David went through but everyone in-country was vulnerable at times. We had 3 Purple Hearts among the dozen officers and EM I served with during 1965-1967, all from terrorist attacks. In December 1965 my quarters were blown up by a car bomb and my roommate was severely wounded. I wasn't there that night otherwise I'd have been wounded along with him, I guess. The guy next door was killed when he walked out to see what the shooting was all about. Back in '62, when I was with the advisory detachment to the 5th VN Inf. Div., I went on several operations all throughout War Zone D, right up to the Cambodian border, but that was early in the war, the NVA hadn't showed up yet and the VC were too weak to attack us in force. Traveling those back roads, especially at night, was a bit hairy but nobody ever bothered us advisors although we had two officers killed in an ambush just before I got there. During Tet '68 things got a bit scary. I was out of country during the first phase but made it back in time for the second one in June of that year where I had a ringside seat on the action. That first morning nobody knew what was going on and that was a bit upsetting. The VC were dug in along a canal about 800 meters from where my quarters were situated. So all in all I had a pretty good war compared to what a lot of other guys went through.

TP, you don't know how often I've told myself the same thing! Both David and I have friends who were really screwed up in combat, I mean with terrible wounds. One's a paraplegic, shot through the chest at very close range with an AK round that severed his spine. That was almost 40 years ago and he's still here, still getting on with his life and dealing with all the hardships of living with an injury like that. Makes you realize our hangnails and athelete's feet aren't all that bad afterall, huh?

Well, I've was stabbed once. That wasn't fun. Wasn't a deep wound, didn't puncture anything, but still. Not fun. Were it not for the fact that it was an accident, I'd probably have killed the guy who did it. Honostly, that was not fun. Still think the worst pain I've ever had to suffer was a migrain that had litterally felled me like a tree. But instead of other trees, I hit the toliet. I hate concussions, and what with a migrain ontop of that, yeah. Been shot by a rubber bullet once, too. That was nothing compared to that migrain: I got back up and started running, too. Pissed blood later, but still running. Freaking Seattle. I hate riots, and I hate getting caught up in them, too. I wasn't protesting, and I got shot! How wierd is that? I was only 17!
