Eric, thanks for sharing that with us.  When in Vietnam I worked with the 1st Philippine Civic Action Group which was based up in Tay Ninh Province with HQ in Saigon.  Got to know many of the NCOs and officers rather well. and they impresed me as a very professional and dedicated group of men.  We drank a lot of San Miguel, I can tell you that!

The enlisted on my ship were very focused and knew there jobs well. I believe the decline in their economy and the life they had in the service was a big factor. They saw what they could be versus where they were from....big mind opener. One of my good friends was a filipino...died why serving on my ship...due to (my opinion) a captain that was not seasoned enough on the ocean to know what the hell he was doing. We were of the coast of Oregon/Washington near the mouth of the Columbian river. A storm was coming and the swells were horrific...we were escorting a couple of tugs pulling a reactor core for a nuke-sub, they anchored to wait out the storm, we went to anchor detail to do the same when the seas took a turn for the worse...instaed of turning the nose of the ship into the massive wave he took the ship around so it would hit on the port side and in doing so wiped out almost everyone on the forcastle. I was in the anchor-windlass room and the hatch to the forcastle was open and i saw the mass amount of water come thru it and heard screams. I yelled to a mate to bring me the medicbag that hung on the bulkhead in the nearby berthing compartment. he tossed it to me and up i went. What I saw still gives me shudders. The wave had slammed over the side of the ship and threw my friend into the 5"gun turret smashing his insides. If you have never been on a naval ship you may not know that most of the exterior deck is covered in what we call nonskid. Well on that day the deck was covered in torn flesh from the sailors that were rolled head over heels from the crashing waves. we had 2 overboard, 1 dead, and 5 serious wounded that day. I bandaged as many as i could with what i had, but had to leave to get back to my post and drop the anchor. That captain was my last one and the reason i did not re-enlist.

Because of my uber-extended-familie's various ranks and pull, I've been on two cruisers, one destroyer, and one active sub. Because Portland has a sub all of it's own, I have natually been on that one, but the one I was on that was still operational was. . . Pretty, to say the least. It's amazing what can happen when a squid hangs himslef. I saw more of that damned cruiser then any other civilian, I'd wager.

I'd say you earned you pay that day.  I know what it's like to walk in gore: 2 September 1960, Grafenwoehr, Germany.  There's a scene reminiscent of that occasion in SCHOOL OF FIRE.
