Starfist Wiki
Posted: 14 Feb 06 10:06 AM Modified By mclark on 2/14/2006 10:09:14 AM)
In the Character List thread we discussed installing a wiki on the site.  I'm familiar with a number of wiki software implementations, including one commercial (and not too expensive) wiki product that is especially designed for DotNetNuke, which is what this site is based on.  The commercial one is the most attractive in some ways because it would most easily be installed here, but it isn't as powerful as the wiki software used for Wikipedia, for example.  A free wiki, called FlexWiki, is available, and because it is based on Microsoft .NET (dot net), and has a lot of Wikipedia-like features, would also fit in here easily.  However, FlexWiki is not easily secured and its markup language has some annoying characteristics.  Wikipedia's wiki software, called Media Wiki, would be great, because it is securable (meaning we can restrict who can edit) and its markup is very sophisticated yet easy to use.  Unfortunately I have no expertise in how to install it.

In short, I would like to put something into play immediately, but my available choices make this problematic.  I'm going to do some more serious investigating, and hope to have something definite in a few days.  In the meantime, I've created a subtab under Starfist, called Characters, and I'm giving Deadshot and Shadowghost1 the ability to edit the Starfist Characters text box in that page.  You can use that to publish the list, if you like, until I can come up with a better alternative.

Thanks Mike.  Great job with the wiki hunt.  I'm out of my league on this so I bow to your knowledge.  Also appreciate the trust.

Ok Shadowghost1, help me out.  How should we attack this?  Set it up as a table, to organize it like an Excel spreadsheet or go with a simple word doc?  I was about to start it with "Charlie Bass"...problem is do I put Staff Srg, Gunny, or Ensign? (I'm currently reading book 11 so not totally sure on the final ranks of the entire crew yet)  I want to make this is as user freindly as possible, such as someone can come in and search via character or book#.  That might help with the whole "Spoiler" issue.  Hmmmm....maybe start with the character's name then have a link that will take them to each book and in that doc explain what happens to that particular character in that particular book.  Not a bad idea.  Thanks for the talk Shadowghost1!  An example of this would be:

Charlie Bass:   Bk 1   Bk2   Bk3

Ok, how does one create a link and will this work?  What do you think Shadow, Mike?
PS: Shadowghost1...email me & I'll send a raw list of characters, places, & things.  Mike, I have your email at work & will send the list tomorrow. Ron.Woodruff@sbcglobal.net

Hi Deadshot,

Sorry for taking so long to respond.  I've been busy with midterms at school.

I think the idea of listing the character and having a link for the books they are in is a good idea.  Also we could make a separate link for rank.  So under the rank link, we could list the progression of rank i.e.

Charlie Bass:  Bk 1  ....  Rank

Rank:  Book 1: Staff Sargeant; Book 5: Gunnery Sargeant;   Book 10: Ensign.

I don't know about the software code used in this forum but most forums I'm on this is how you create a link (without the underscores):  [_link/_]url[_/link_].

I'll email you tonight.

Shadow

Shadow,

Thanks for responding.  Midterms huh?  So glad that is over with!  Sent you the raw list.  As far as the character tree, I'll put it up, you link it. ;) The techo stuff is all yours.
Actually in Book 1 Bass started out as a Gunny and was busted down b/c he beat the crap out of the UPUD guy.

Anyone else out there want to contribute?  Don't be shy.  Anyone, anyone, Bueler?  I think we're going to divide the characters via Books, so plenty to go around.
