I am surpise that when Cazombi was asked to surrender in the book you didn't Have him Say NUTS!  you guys are very good at putting in references to the 20th centry.  I would have liked to see Lyons reaction to that one.

NUTS was a mid-20th century slang word, and would it be common or even something anyone would know about a few hundred years later?  Probably not.  Though military folks would likely remember their history, and perhaps Cazombi and Lyons both would be aware of that classic answer.  I expect that had Cazombi made that particular response, Lyons would likely have recognized it -- and probably would have recognized Cazombi's intent.

MC:  Good points.  We just didn't think of McAuliffe's reply to the Germans at Bastogne or we'd have used it!  And you bet, Lyons would've known just what "Nuts!" meant, any professional soldier would recognize the famous reply even 400 years after it was given. Stuff like that just doesn't get forgotten once it's in the books.  We still remember Leonidas's reply to Xerexes' demand that the Spartans at Thermopylae give up their arms, "Then come and get them!" or the Spartan Dienekes' comment when informed that the Persian arrows would blot out the sun:  "Good!  Then we can fight in the shade!"
