I'm a little confused on two little things that happened in Flashfire.  Here are my questions:

1.  Isn't Owen the Woo, Cpl. Dean's little buddy?  I mean it's not strange that he said bye to the Skipper.  I'm just curious as to why that was the scene the author's chose to show to say goodbye to Owen.  Dean hasn't seemed to miss Owen all that much in the last few books; but it just seemed from the Diamunde book and the book immediate following that one, that Dean would have missed Owen more.

2.  What happened between Erika and Dean that had her giving him an evil/angry look during the scene in Big Barb's?

Otherwise, I really liked Flashfire.  It is an excellent addition to the series.  I'm looking forward to the sequel.

I'll answer question 2; your question 1 is up to Dan. In an earlier book, Dean and Erika were very hot to trot for each other. For reasons unknown to either Dan or me, Dean dropped her for Carlala. Erika resents his dropping her.

Heeeeeey, being loving, caring, and wonderful gents, you don't think we'd write Owen off do you?  No, no, not just yet.  Too many readers like the little bugger for us to let him die on them.  Oh, he's getting on in years, we all are and perhaps in that scene I was unconsciously creating a reflection of the authors themselves.  That's another reason we ain't gonna let him go anytime soon.   Anyway, if the series lasts long enough I have plans for Owen the Woo.  Second, he's become the company mascot and as an intelligent creature, possibly more intelligent than Dean (!), he's just expanded his circle of friends.  And third, we just might've forgotten about him.  You know, when we first started this series we created a list of all the people, places, and things we'd invented to populate the Starfist universe.  Well, now it's turned into an enormous catalog and as we move forward through these books it's very easy to lose track of characters because the plots just don't call for them to appear and Owen doesn't go on deployments after what happened on Avionia Station. 

So keep your eye on us, we need all the help we can get!

Thanks, Mr. Cragg and Mr. Sherman.  I'm glad Owen will be sticking around.  He makes for some great fun.
