Flash Fire

I have read all the books associated with this series and Demontech. Being a former service member my self I have greatly appreciated your attention to detail in the battle sequences. Your last three books however have me wondering why you have incorporated so many subplots away from the activities of the 34 FIST. Just finishing FLASHFIRE, you totally had me in the story except for the sub plot with Charlette and Donnie.Hopefully in the sequel they will become germain to the story. Being in the military over 20 years ago I guess maybe I get caught up in the terminology and situations at once so familiar and yet so distant that I may need to reread the last three to see if I am missing something. Sorry for the rambling but this series has brought back many memories from a time I hold in high regard. Many of your characters, with names changed, could have been buddies of mine. Thanks!

Hooligan:

Thanks for those comments, they're very valuable to us not just because they're intelligent criticisms, but because they're straight from the heart.

We understand perfectly how you can relate to the characters in these stories because they are reflections of the universal experiences of military life and war, both of which we have all been through.  You may have noticed also that the older you get the more precious the adventures of your youth become, in retrospect.  I'm confident that could we resurrect one of Caesar's legionnaires he'd find in these stories characters and situations reminiscent of his own service in Gaul.

The subplots are included for variety and to give us a break from mentally slogging through the bush again.  We've done over a dozen books in the main series and the force recon spinoff and sometimes we need some R&R and we think our readers do too.  Writing this stuff is hard work, brother!  The Charlette-Donnie subplot was included to show that life goes on even in a war zone but also to create a dilemma that needs resolution.  The two come back at a critical juncture in POINTBLANK, the next book (release date, August 29, 2006), and finally in FIRESTORM, which we're writing now, where Charlette gets a chance to explain what she's been up to since she disappeared and to show how the Confederation army's leadership handles her story.  Hey, the girl thinks she's a deserter and maybe even a traitor.

We know we don't always get it right and we aren't comparing ourselves to James Jones or Ernest Hemingway, but we do try to make our stories, the main plots and the sub plots, interesting and realistic and we'd appreciate it if you'd let us know if you think we succeeded or not.

 Silly Dan "wrote"

Povided, of course, that you can find someone to teach him English, or translate the book into latin... And compensate for the culture shock... And not have him try and steal your boots... And make sure he doens't invade France... Again.

.  .  .

What am I talking about!? He'd do it one handed and STILL win!

Hey, I only invaided Quebec, not France Proper. I swear, the sooner the Dominion is rid of those goat-molesting weeds/whopsies, the better.
