David!  What the #$%! are these guys talking about?  "Movie" to me means "Casablanca," "Sands of Iwo Jima," like that.

lol dont worry its just Japanses cartoons. But honestly some do carry very good stories and deep meanings, if you ever get the chance check out "Grave of the fireflies"its about Japan during WW2 following 2 kids as they are evacuated from the main city due to fire bombing...its a touching sad story...heck look for the Studio Ghilbili animes that Disney released, Porko Rosso was one of my favorites of his, dealing with a odd ww1 world of seaplanes and pirates and Laputa (Castle in the sky) and spirited away and howls moving castle...he does some fantastic work making these worlds come to life...Jin-Roh is also cool...ok i'll stop now...

Skink, get your head out of games and everything related to them. They have no relationship to reality, and Starfist is noted for its realistic characters and situations. If you must look at games, the early versions of World of Warcraft and Command and Conquer were pretty good, but then they got wrapped up in heroes and walking mechs, which are okay I guess as fantasy, but have no relation to real combat. If you prefer first person shooters, try the Marine Corps version of Doom, which was designed to teach squad tactics. Bipedal combat mechs? Gimme a break. You want movies? Take a long hard look at Saving Private Ryan, or Zulu, or Hell is for Heroes. Ted Turner's Gettysburg is a good one for a civil war.

More than games and movies, read histories of wars, try Martin van Creveld for war theory. In my library I've got more than 200 books on warfare, not counting military SF, more non-fiction than novels. I've read every one of them for research, and I often refer to them when I'm writing.

If you want to write geewiz flashbang jerkoff fanfic, play in a different sandbox. If you want to write Starfist fanfic, learn something about what war is really like.

None of which is meant to discourage you. I hope you wind up writing something good, but please demonstrate some knowledge of reality.

Ah hell, it sounds to me like I'm stomping pretty hard on poor Skinky. Sorry, man. It's just that you're mucking about with something Dan and I created, and I have a very strong feeling of propriatorship about it. Fanfic is a sign of respect, and authors shouldn't slam the people who want to honor their work that way. Do what you want.

Well, after thinking about it you are right! I need to read some real war novels.
