The Reality Dysfunction is a sci-fi 'space opra' novel by Peter F. Hamilton, and Wiki says it is the first book in The Night's Dawn Trilogy. What I know is it is a very good book that introduces some 'tricky twists' into the metaphysical. I'm always interesed when authors write about technology taht makes sense instead of dealing with computers, genetics, society at a 1950s level. The only better author at dealing with these issues in a story is Stross.
If you want something more mainstream by Hamilton, and short with a bit more military action try Fallen Dragon.
I just got around to reading the sequel to Reality Dysfunction, called The Neutronium Alchemist. I just love the way this guy writes and the world's he makes. The only thing I would add is if the "occult" makes you uneasy this might not be the series for you. But if you like big sprawling imaginative universes you'll love this series.
