This is a three-book series by Walter Jon Williams. I've just finished it, and I have to say words fail to describe how wonderful a series I found it to be.

It has a couple of themes that ought to resonate well with Starfist fans: incompetent aristocracy, and a very hefty dose of military.

This one wears four stars on its shoulder boards.

I picked up the first book several months ago, but haven't gotten to it yet.   I read over part of the first chapter and it really sounded engaging.
