Skink, did you really have to quote the whole damn review?

Dan and I proved unable to properly write the two dimentional characters demanded by the Star Wars universe. But Lucas wanted us to show Anakin learning and earning the ability to lead, so that's what we tried to do. Which was a bitch in that universe, where nobody developes and comes into contact with reality.

The difference between the original trio of Star Wars movies and the second (there were supposed to be nine in all, but Lucas decided to quit after six) is the early movies paid primary attention to character and story, the latter three paid primary attention to special effects.

Well, chaps, the doggone book made the NYT best-seller list, albeit briefly, and has sold today more than 100,000 copies, so Lucas made money off of it (so did we in the advance of $50,000).  If any one of our Starfist novels sold that well we'd be rolling in dough and would gladly spend it hosting a humongous beer party for our fans.  You may have noticed TRIAL is copyrighted not in our names but in Lucasfilm, Ltd.'s name.  Our royalty rate on that book is so low the worms have to crawl over it.  But we feel we earned our money.  Lucasfilm asked us to write the book because they liked our approach to the Starfist world and thought it would work well in their own universe and they accepted what we gave them with very few changes.  What they got was a book with real characters and a substantial plot, not an adolescent fantasy.  I'm sure even after they read the bad reviews they cried all the way to the bank.

Its cool they came to you and and asked you to do it, no problem there. I also understand the money thing as writer and whatever works to keep the steaks on the table. As StarFist keeps going I hope it makes it to the Best Seller list, I would nominate Kingdoms Sword/Fury for a best seller compilation, one book, STARFIST - Kingdom:Campaign. The trifecta ya have going on with the FlashFire/PointBlank/Firestorm would be a great compilation republish, The multi threaded campaign on ravenette is very engrossing. Has Firestorm done well?

As a loyal fan, If Lucasfilm or other entities approach you in the  future to write within their realm, I will pick the books up and read them happily.

Skink, as to your question, I agree, the special effects overshadowed the story, and the dialogue and acting were hollow. Its just my opinion, if you enjoyed them, thats cool too.

Thanks,

Trang

Lest anyone misunderstand what Dan said about the advance for Jedi Trial: That was $50,000, less the agent's 15% commission, between us, doled out in four parts over a three year period.

Trang: Steaks? Try hot dogs and mac and cheese. Which Dan eats because he likes it, and I eat because it fits within my budget--hamburgers when it's on sale and I feel a need to treat myself.
