ATTACKS.

Having only been MOS-q'd, I've been in training for the past 9 months. Having read ATTACKS by Feild Marshal Erwin Rommel, I can say with as much authority as any soldier in training can say, that according to what he has written, the field training I have taken part in could have very well been written by the Marshal some 70 years ago. The only differences are merely technological. Everything he describes in the fighting, from clearing a building to reacting to contact while on patrol... It's all the same.

A good read for those who wish to know more about World War One, a seriously mis-understood war.

WW1 was a test for the Generals of it's time because the inital way to fight would to have your troops line up, charge and take a trench. Now that was very good during the 16th through 19th Centuries but once WW1 began, Generals and Admrials had to change tatics. It was the first time Air Planes were used. It was also a first for the Germans to use U-Boats heavily during the blockade aganist England. WW1 shaped how we would fight today. What a sad war.

Not only that but the way the Allies handled the peace was the direct cause of WWII.

You know even though what Hitler did was un human (Not the Holocaust) I can see why he did what he did. Here is what the treaty says:

The Treaty of Versailles was horrible, to be sure. But WWI wasn't the prelude to modern warfare. The US Civil War is considered the first modern war--also the last Napoleonic war. In the beginning, everybody used Napoleonic tactics, seried ranks of musketeers firing volleys at each other. Unfortunately, they were initially using rifled muskets, which were much more accurate than the smooth-bore kind. Later, many units had real rifles. It's suicide to stand in ranks blasting away with rifles. Also unfortunately, not all of the generals figured out the difference during the war. The new technology required new tactics, and when generals were slow to adopt the new tactics, casualties mounted. That's why the Civil War was so horrendous.
