The Taking

The Taking by Dean Koontz

I read it earlier this summer, and before that I'd tried to read it two other times, but couldn't get past page twenty.  The first few pages are kinda iffey, he sounds too much like Stephen King for my liking, but after that it really, really, really picks up.

At first all you really know is that some kind of freaky rain is coming down locally, it's faintly luminscent and has an odd smell.  Before long you find out that all over the world the weather is going crazy, with storms covering entire continents, and water spouts miles long spinning off of the oceans.

TV reception is intermittent, and is lost totally soon.  A radio broadcast from the International Space Station makes it clear:  Extraterrestrial beings with godlike powers are invading earth.

In the wake of the rain, strange new life begins populating the town in which the story takes place as the death toll climbs.

That's all I'll give away.  This book is INCREDIBLE.  It's very, very dark though, which surprised me, considering how almost all his other books try to keep things somewhat light.  It's more horror than science fiction, and man, is it a great horror story.  Definitely worth looking into if you either like Dean Koontz or just horror stories in general.
