My mom wants me to read something else besides sci fi. You see, Sci fi is all I know it is all I've read. Hell, my first book was "StarShip Troopers" Are there any other good books out there? I want to look, I'm just afriad of leaving my sci fi world that I know and love. But this does not mean that I won;t read StarFist. Sooooooo, any advice?

mystery and fiction are my favorite standby...

mystery/horror check out Dean Koontz, i started with Lightning and got hooked...

Fiction, but its practicly Sci-fi Dale Brown and his Area-51 aka."Dreamland" based airforce stories start with "Flight of the Old Dog" one of my favorite series...

have you gone into Fantasy/High Fantasy at all?Tolken...or something along those lines... Look at "Grunts" by Mary Gentle...orks and alot of fun...

Alternate reality Sci-fi/fantasy...S.M.Stirling writes some great storys putting modern man into some odd timezones..."Island in the sea of Time" is a good place to start...and my current favorite storyline starts with "Dies the Fire" which actualy happens back in current time earth while the "Island in the sea of Time" happens...its a neat tie in...but in Dies the fire a change happens planet wide and all forms of high power is taken...google the book for more info...its one of my all time favorites so far...

Mystery/suspense J.D.Robb comes highly recomended my own Hunny...she has all her books...the "In Death" series...

and of course, you gotta read Harry Potter... just because...

Jep, all good stuff.

skink, Im guessing your in your upper teens? not trying to be offensive or anything, just hard to gauge what you might be interested in.

There is a whole world of fiction and nonfiction out there, just depends on what ya want to read for: entertainment, edification, research etc.

Im going to guess for entertainment. Two areas I float to are fantasty and Action/adventure. Fantasty is actually as heavy a passion as science fiction but I have to stay away from it cause the fantasy genre is about 3 times as deep authors/books as sci fi  is and everytime I go down that road It takes forever to get back. Action/adventure isnt as large but still lots of great stuff.

I'll get back to the above two in a second, I want to throw out a couple suggestions I think everyone should read:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homer Illiad and the Odessy
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shakespere  His Play's

As for action/adventure,  I would check into Tom Clancy and Ian Flemming, spy thrillers and such, good stuff.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Clancy Jack Ryan/John Clark universe
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ian_Flemming James Bond series

Fanatasy is hard cause there is so much. The obvious choice is Tolkein, but if you have read those You might try Dave Eddings, RA Salvatore, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Robert E. Howard, C. S. Lewis, Stephen R. Donaldson,or Robert Jorden

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddings Belgaried and Mallorean Series

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Jordan Wheel of Time

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_E._Howard Conan series

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edgar_Rice_Burroughs Tarzan

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ra_salvatore Drizzt Series (Dungeons and Dragons Forgotten realms)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C_s_lewis Chronicles of Narnia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_R._Donaldson The chronicles of Thomas Covenant

Crossover Authors between sci-fi and fanatasy Anne McCaffrey, Andre Norton, C. J. Cherryh, Robert Silverberg

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ann_McCaffrey Dragonriders of Pern series
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andre_Norton Witch World series
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C._J._Cherryh The Morgaine series
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Silverberg Lord Valentines Castle and the Majipoor books

This should give you some additional things to look at,

Luck to ya,

Trang

Snap,

forgot to mention Biographies and History. Might look into some of the people that interest you (actors, sports stars, business people, poltical figures, authors, historical figures) and history is pretty wide open also(world, nation, Local, etc). You would be surprised at just looking into the history of the town you live in and stories (fiction or Non fiction) that you come up with. I live in Kansas City, Missouri and its 150 years old. It has a rich history in Jazz, Mafia, Trade, War, Politics, etc. Just an example.

The more ya look and brainstorm the more ya can find to read.

But Im with ya Sci-fi is my Favorite and will remain.

Later,
Trang
