As for specific authors: Donald E. Westlake (IMHO the best living American writer) Ed McBain (also wrote as Evan Hunter) Elmore Leonard (I learned an awful lot about writing by reading him) Lawrence Shames (set in Florida) Tim Dorsey (also Florida) Ellis Peters' Brother Cadfael series John D. MacDonald (IMHO the best American writer of the second half of the 20th Century) Dan Simmons is probably best known for his SF, but he's also written other novels that are worth checking out. That's more than enough to hold you for awhile.
