Pay attention to what Night Stalker says about milSF books. I flinched everytime I saw the battle-babe on the cover of A Hymn Before Dying, and never picked up on John Ringo because of it. But Ed insisted, and insisted, so I finally gritted my teeth and gave it a try. Good book. And not a battle-babe to be found beyond the cover.

<Grin> Depends on what you call a "Battle-babe" - John takes Heinlein's thing about "beautiful and deadly women" and takes it to the nth degree. Just about every female main character in John's work is dangerous. I'm thinking of that gal on the cover of AHBB, Anne Elgars. She's carrying a Barrett .50, and, among other things, takes down an alien "God King" at 1200 yards from the top of the Washington Monument. Then there's Cally O'Neal, 16 years old, being sexually harassed by an SFC. She takes a 9mm and kneecaps him. When he tries to claim attempted murder, she fires a "possible" - 360 of 360 on the pistol course. "If I wanted to kill him, I would have." is her defense.

Or, one of my favorite scenes. Creata is a safecracker. Her team name is "Mouse". Guy comes in and kills her security. "Please go away" she requests. "No," he says, "I like to hurt little girls like you." So she sighs and diembowels him with the laser drill she's using to open the safe. But she's nice about it, and since he's taking awhile to die, she puts a 9mm behind his ear...then calmly resumes cracking the safe.

and I won't even go into "Princess of Wands" - a suburban housewife soccer mom that is a Black Belt and a competition shooter...let's just say, you get into the book, and the suspension of disbelief is fantastic.

Ed, I wasn't talking about the women who actually appeared in Ringo's books. What kept turning me away was that sex-pot on the cover. Ringo's women were well done.

Loved Princess of Wands. Want more.

The Prime Master read the message again. This time, by the time he finished reading, he smiled beatifically. The message included a great deal of information about the Earthman Army and airpower and their tactics. This was inteligence that would serve the Emperor's army well when it next encountered the Earthman Army. As it most assuredly would.......
