Thanks. One of those guys was Ira Hays, I believe, who died tragically after the war. In fact I think all those guys ended their lives tragically.

I'd have to look it up to be exact, but at least two of the flag raisers, maybe four of them, died in the battle for Iwo Jima. The last I heard, maybe ten years ago, one of them was still alive.

I believe that it was just 2 of the flag raisers that were killed on Iwo.

I think the Marine you are talking about was Mr. Bradley's (the author of Flags of Our Fathers) father.  I could be wrong though.  I forgot when Mr. Bradley Sr. died.

edit:  I always get their last name wrong: it's Bradley not Brady (like I had before this edit)...

Brotherhood of Heroes: The Marines at Peleliu 1944 by Bill Sloan.  This is a well researched history of the fight for Peleliu.  The author interviewed veterans and read action reports in order to build this book.  The book covers everything from the first landing wave to the invasion of Okinawa.  He includes the mistakes that were made, as well as the great deeds commited by the Marines.

Wow!  He's graduated to two-worders!  Or is that just one word with the hyphen?
