Sorry about making my own new thread guys but I've got enough recommends that I couldn't help myself. So without further ado, here're some of my recommendations. I'll save my sci-fi military books for the thread of the same topic.
Firebirds by Chuck Carlock - Dan and David, this one's for you guys. Chuck was a Vietnam chopper pilot. It's a great storytelling excercise about his many experiences during the war and he finds humor in many of his stories. Some of the stories he tells are absolutely amazing and are vividly written. Sure his writing style isn't amazing but the stories and their ideas come through brilliantly. For anyone who enjoys reading up on war history/stories, this is most definitely a book for you.
Dark Tower by Stephen King - I got into this series in January and I've only put it down long enough to read my Starfist books. King really does an amazing job of blending wild west with fantasy and throwing a little "alien" in real life to boot. Some have called this a The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly meets Lord of the Rings and that title most definitely fits. The story reads very well and the many intricacies are well written. Seeing Roland, the main character, going through some experiences in our world prove to be highly humorous and very action intensive. All in all, this is a definite favorite of mine.
The Taking by Dean Koontz - Here is a great writer who presents a story very much different from his usual. As far as thrillers go, this one is definitely very creepy. The twist at the end is one which you'll never see coming and it is without a doubt one of the more intriguing reads I've had outside of Starfist.
Homebody by Orson Scott Card - Ironically, these are the only two thrillers in my library (though I'm trying to get a copy of Dean Kontz's Lightning since that's another amazing book). This one really does a good job of touching on a long-term grieving husband who fixes up houses to sell comes into a house like no other he's ever worked on. While nowhere near as creepy as The Taking, this is still a well written book that breaks away from Card's Ender's Game series.
