Mike:  Ever see "Soldier in the Rain" with Jackie Gleason and Steve McQueen?  Saluting in civvies is something that Maxwell Salughter would've done.  That's OLD Army!  There's no rule against saluting in civilian garb.  The hand salute is, after all, an exchange of courtesies.  Now if you were out hunting with your Marlin Model 1894 .44 mag. and you started giving everyone a rifle salute, people might think that a bit strange...  Anyway, you get an A++ in Military Courtesy & Customs for rendering that hand salute, soldier!

1963, I'd just been back from VN only a short while when I saw this movie at Ft. Bragg.
