Mel has kinda lost his bearings since "The Patriot". Hopefully he comes to his senses because he is a fine actor.

He can render superb performances on the screen when he's sober.  Ever see him in "Hamlet"?  That is one interpretation of Hamlet I think really captures the character's spirit as Shakespeare intended, not the weepy, cognitive wimps other actors have given us.  Mel's best when he performs under someone else's rather than his own direction.  When he directs he becomes maudlin and stupid.
