Got it!
Posted: 29 Aug 06 8:52 PM
Well, I went to Barnes and Noble today and picked up two copies (one of which will be a gift). I have started reading, but I am presently in the middle of Night Fighters III (Out of the Fire), and it is really catching my interest. I am clearly conflicted! Last week I also started reading David's "There I Was" (another VN-era novel about CAP), while waiting for NF3 to come in the mail. Too much to read! Too much I WANT to read.
Too much of a good thing?
Nah. Just fun to complain about it!
:-)

I too went to my Barnes & Noble to pick up my copy of Point Blank....and my oh my...did our author's do a bit of foreshadowing with Jak Daly buying vids and readers? I have read the first 80pgs and am seeing a plot unfold...underground cavern with no opening...darkside...mission two force recon members can't discuss....hmmmmm...I am as giddy as a teenager getting his first taste of tail!

Just remember, voracious readers are optimists, they believe they'll live long enough to read all their books. So keep buying and you'll live forever.

Wow!
As mentioned, I picked PB up on the day of release (had to get the B&N clerk to go back to the storeroom because they hadn't yet put any copies on the shelves), but up until yesterday didn't really have much time to read in it. Still, looked promising as far as I had gone.
And now, having read through just over halfway, I have to say that I am really excited about this book. I always appreciated how writers like Tom Clancy would fire up four or five or more subplots and jump between them as the story unfolded -- this is something that kept a complex tale a bit more manageable -- but Clancy's subplots almost invariably are slow, plodding affairs, with some but not that much action, at least until you get towards the end when some of the subplots come together and the action increases towards some sort of climax. That's OK, Clancy writes well enough (in my opinion) that the plodding subplots still work. But David and Daniel provide tons of action in every subplot (even though the subplot on Arsenaugh seems so far unrelated to the Ravenette situation), even early on. I'm lovin' it!
One thing I was really pleased with was when one Force Recon patrol leader decides to move along the boundary between forest and open space because, he figures, he'll run into less wildlife that way. I was saying to myself, oh no, he won't, because grazers like deer prefer such margins because they offer both closeness to fodder (meadow) and closeness to the relative safety due to concealment. (forest). And so, of course, predators like it too! So, the patrol leader was surprised to find his surmise to be incorrect! Good, good, D&D didn't miss that little niggling detail! Love it! Also when a spaceship was popping out flares to defend against heat-seeking missiles, the writers made it clear that the flares were oxy-magnesium, not simply magnesium flares. Because of course magnesium won't burn in space without a source of oxygen. So, there's good chemistry, too!
Now to keep reading....
Later!
