Em Cee:

Not self-promotion, old chap, humor, nothing more than humor.

But we aren't the first authors to mention themselves in their works.  In Act II of "Don Giovanni" Mozart (or Lorenzo DaPonte, his librettist) makes a reference to "The Marriage of Figaro," and of course you all must be familiar with General Stanley's aria in Act I of "The Pirates of Penzance," where he sings, "Then I can hum a fuge of which I've heard the music's din afore / And whistle all the airs from that infernal nonsense, 'Pinafore'."  You know, we've written over a million words in this series thusfar so I think we've earned the right to inject a little humor into our stuff from time to time, wouldn't you agree?  Well, maybe not, but we do need something every once in a while to relieve the tension of all these scenes of battle, slaughter, betrayal, and destruction.  Otherwise we'd be crazier than we already are as Vietnam vets.

When I was a boy I invented a character, Baron von Misthaufen, based on Professor Challenger, I admit, who'd go around debunking various mysteries and having all kinds of adventures.  Even today J. B. Post sometimes refers to me as "the Baron."  Well, when I finally got to Germany I told one of my German colleagues about the "Baron" and he immediately dubbed me "Baron von Scheissheim."

Yrs, truly,
BvM

Learning a foreign language is always a worthy project but when we meet at a con someday I'll just tell you where to look for the in-jokes.

Ja, Deutsch ist besser.  Ich habe nur eins Jahre hinter mir, aber es ist spass.

I know I probably butchered spellings and grammar, but like I tried to say there, I've only got a year of it behind me.
