Observations
Posted: 14 Oct 06 9:11 PM Modified By shadowghost1 on 10/14/2006 9:12:23 PM)

I am about 100 pages from finishing the book.  This book was well written and attention keeping.  There are a couple of things that have really grabbed my attention in the book so far:

1) The tribute of sorts to the 2004 Tsunami victims/countries.  I liked that a lot, plus the mention of what went wrong.

2) Bella Dwan, while an interesting character, should never have been a sniper.  All other characters are technically great (as in could be taken out of the book and put in the real world and be believable).  However, Dwan would never have passed sniper school (in any branch) with her attitude.  I know that I wouldn't want her on/attached to my squad (if I were a Marine) with her attitude regardless of skill.  She is too impatient.  Snipers sit still for much longer than most units sit on ambushes, and yet she couldn't sit still for more than 20 minutes (if that)?  (i.e. Carlos Hatchcock sat still for 2 whole days waiting for a good shot, another time moved about a centimeter an hour to get into position, Ed Kugler & Co. often sat still for a whole day waiting for targets.)  Snipers, by nature, are very patient and calm and calculating.  She seems to not carefully decide whom to kill.  For instance, Kare had to explain to her why she needed to shoot the driver of the lead car first before chasing other targets.  From what I've read about snipers, most of them would have instinctively gone for the driver of the lead car in order to create more targets.  Of course, I could be missing a major part of the reason for why she is the way she is.  (Could she be off her rocker?  cuz she seems to be...)

Despite what the second observation makes it seem like, I really do like this book.  Dwan does not really detract from the story for me, but she is distracting because of her attitude.  Great characterizations though, the characters are as real as fictional people can get!  :)  I'm sorry that Manny got killed off, I liked him.  Looking forward to the next book (and to the last 100 pages of this book).

Shadow:  Hey, thanks for the compliments on POINTBLANK!  You've always approached our books with an open mind and a very sound appreciation of military life as well as the writing craft.  When you tell us you like something we've written we know you aren't just bullshitting and your observations are always perceptive and useful.

David's up here with me this weekend.  We're plotting the final (on this contract anyway) book in the Force Recon spinoff series.  Since dear little Bela is his creation, I'll let him comment separately but for me, I agree with you, I think she's dangerously disturbed and have been asking David to kill the bitch.

So you liked Manny?  Well, I liked the guy too.  It takes all kinds of people to make a universe.  I was afraid some of the(presumably)  intensely macho guys on this site might shower us with wiseass remarks about Manny.  I tried to write his character from the perspective that there are a lot of qualities that go into making up a personality and in fiction as well as real life you should consider them all before passing judgments.  OK, guys, relax!  You'll never find any Foleys in these books!  There are some places not even we will go!

Shadowghost1,

I just read your observations and Dan's reply. Good show, thank you much.

The tsunami was Dan's idea, and I thought it was a splendid one. Glad it went over so well with you. But, as Dan said, Bella Dwan is mine, so I'll reply to her.

Bluntly, our then-editor told us at one point that she wanted a woman in the next book, which next book happened to be Backshot. The differences between male and female are profound, both physically and psychologically. Neither Dan nor I could bring ourselves to do the PC thing and put a woman in one of the regular squads; it simply wouldn't work out, for reasons I don't want to go into in this reply. However, at that time I'd recently read about a woman in the army who'd just won the national intra-military rifle competition, so we decided that a woman sniper would work out quite well. Is Bella Dwan "off her rocker"? You bet'chum, Red Ryder! It has to do with the profound male/female psychological differences--not to mention some of the physical differences. I decided, in the interests of veracity, to exaggerate the differences, you know, to drive the point home. As for Bella's lack of patience and needing Gossner to explain to her why to shoot the driver first:

Bella has a problem with authority figures, which should have been evident from the beginning of Backshot when she was coaching Daly and calling him "big boy" instead of "Sergeant." But when Gossner had to explain to her the need to shoot the driver before the officer, *ahem*, that was really for the benefit of readers less astute than the members of this board--not everybody would understand why, so I told everybody, including those who don't need the explanation.

If you'll recall in Backshot, Bella was quite patient and methodical, both in picking her site and and taking her shot. Here, her shot set off the ambush. And she wanted to make sure _she_ got to shoot the officer. Her authority figure problem, you see.

Dan mentioned we're plotting the last book on our current contract. Rest assured, we've already begun badgering our agent to open negotiations for more Starfist and Starfist: Force Recon books so that we can continue working uninterrupted when we finish writing this one.

I could go on about what makes Bella tick, but that's a topic for someplace else.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Now Bella makes more sense to me.  :)

I hope that your agent gets a deal for more books in both series!

Hold the phone...current contract?  Don't make me nervous.  How long does a 'contract' go for?  Agent...you need me to call super agent Scott Boras...worked for A-Rod & Barry Bonds?

And I like Bella, course I have a thing for psycho chicks w/ guns who get arosed killing people and have an athority issue.  Makes for a good story to have a character like that...creates discussion.  She's a keeper David, no matter how times Danners wants to have a house fall on her!
