Nevah hoppen, Joe. Schultz likes to fight, Recon usually avoids fights. Some people simply like the military life, but don't want the responsibility that comes with rank. They used to be called "professional privates," but were done away with in the mid-sixties when the "up or out" policy was instituted. We had one in my company in Hawaii, a private who had repeatedly turned down promotion to PFC. The policy change came down not long before his enlistment was up. He was very upset when he learned that he couldn't ship over without being promoted to PFC. He accepted it when he was assured that all it meant was he'd have a bigger payday. But privately, everybody in the company wondered how he'd react when it came time to reenlist again and he realized he had to be promoted to lance corporal in order to do so.
