This was Balticon, the Baltimore Science Fiction Convention. The panel was SF writers, and some of us are vets. There are no cloned human beings, so there weren't any real clones. The writers on the panel who were vets uniformly thought raising clones to be soldiers was a dreadful idea. The writers who didn't have military experience treated the subject as an intellictual exercise and thought the idea had merit.

Is that more clear?

Clones as soldiers... Hmm. An interesting idea so far as a mental masturbation, but as soldiers? Naw. Take too long, too much time, and too much money to raise and train them from birth. Yes, you MAY get some exceedingly high value warriors out of them, but... I have a feeling that ti would a hell of a lot better to just draw off a native population to supply soldaten für der Vaterland.
