Posted: 28 Jun 07 8:33 PM
Im sorry Dan and David, but it seemed that Charlie Bass wasnt in the thick of battle, or we didnt see him. What happened. It didnt seem to me he was as crazy, like on Elneal, since he got his commission. I the Charlie Bass we have come to know and love become less risky with his promotion to Ensign and to (Spoiler) Lieutenant. I dont know. lemme hear what you guys have to say.

Is he more cautious? I hadn't noticed. But, remember, the focal characters shift from book to book.

As David pointed out in his post, we concentrate on different characters for each novel.  We think this gives us a chance to explore widely different personalities.  For instance, after 13 novels dealing with the adventures of Sam Smith wouldn't you get tired of reading about Sam Smith?  You'd have figured out everything about him after Book 3.  Now sometimes it might seem we "forget" about prominent characters but that's only because we've shifted our concentration to another individul.  It's been quite a while since we mentioned Owen the Woo but he is not forgotten and as the stories continue to unfold you'll see more of him, if only "cameo" appearances.

That is entirely true. Will you soon shift the focal point back on Bass?

Eventually. There are two reasons the series has gone on as long as it has. 1) You folks keep buying it and making money for Del Rey. 2) We keep moving things around so that we avoid repeating ourselves, which would bore us out of our skulls, and we would have quit several books ago. That's why there's no one big war, or one continual main character. Boredom on the part of an author will kill a series faster than anything else.
