SPOILER: Personnel
Posted: 09 Jul 07 9:58 PM Modified By kb7iuj on 7/9/2007 10:00:28 PM)
My, it's been a while since I poked my face in here.  I got a little busy doing other things.  So, Firestorm:  not bad at all :-)  I got a little confused about Odinloc getting rescued; I thought Recon took care of that at the very end of "Pointblank".  Then it happens again in "Firestorm".

Now, on to my real question.

With the Big Secret out, the need to keep all of the secret's eggs in one basket (on Thorsfinni's World) is no longer there.  The only reason several members of 34th FIST are still there was because someone slapped a no-rotation order on them.  Would we see a sudden increase in turnover now - more fresh faces, and others getting packed up and shipped out to other FISTs?  Maybe to share knowledge with other FISTs about the danger they're facing - and specific details?

If I had to bet on anything, I'd bet on Commander Van Winkle - and maybe Colonel Ramadan - transferring out.  Van Winkle we haven't seen much of lately, and he hasn't been that major a character over the last few books.  As for Ramadan... Aguinaldo would probably want to give him a FIST of his own, again in order to spread Skink experience around.  Brigadier Sturgeon... that's a toss-up.  One of the authors mentioned to me in a forum that Sturgeon wouldn't want to leave FIST command - though it might mean a transfer to another FIST, since he was due for rotation too.  He's just too colorful a character - like a more refined Charlie Bass - for me to expect D&D to transfer him off the radar, though.

But that's just my random guessing. Loved the book, guys, keep them coming.

Aaah exactly the subject I've been fearing to think about. Rotations. Let's face it guys, we lose loved Characters when rotations happened. The quarantine made me click my heels with joy, because I knew my third herd friends were there for the duration, same as me. Now that the skink secret is out, they don't need to be quarantined anymore. Danners or David, care to elaborate on your plans?

No, Goldie Soldie.  If we tell our plans now, who'll by the books?  As to KB's comment on Charlette's rescue, that is a flashback in this book, a wrapping up of that loose end, you might say.

I am thinking the main characters of 3rd Herd will stay intact. The first to fight the bastards and the ones with the most experience stick together to overcome a vast evil. Now the officers are another story alllllll together.

Alas, is that what happens in the real world? That's the question. 34F has been together all these years, and they've been through the ringer more than other units.

We might start seeing some psychological damage soon - maybe high command has thrown too much at this hardship post, and they need some real downtime (which from the pace of things they aren't likely to get).
